He was raised in a modest household by his parents, Philma van Söhnen, a garment worker, and Abraham James Manuel, who worked for the Cape Town City Council until his untimely death when Trevor was just 13 years old.

Career

Manuel became politically active during the 1980s, a period marked by intense resistance to apartheid in South Africa. In 1981, he took on the role of General Secretary of the Cape Areas Housing Action Committee, where he advocated for housing rights for black South Africans. His involvement in the anti-apartheid movement led him to join the African National Congress (ANC).

After the end of apartheid and the establishment of a democratic government in 1994, Trevor Manuel was appointed as the first Minister of Trade and Industry in the newly elected ANC government. In 1996, he was promoted to Minister of Finance, a position he held until 2009.

In 2009, after the election of President Jacob Zuma, Manuel was appointed as the Minister in the Presidency for the National Planning Commission. He served in this capacity until his retirement from politics in 2014.

After leaving politics, Manuel transitioned into the private sector. In October 2014, he joined the global financial advisory firm Rothschild Group as a senior adviser and was appointed deputy chairman of its South African subsidiary. In March 2017, he succeeded Bruce Hemphill as chairman of Old Mutual Emerging Markets, further solidifying his influence in the business community.
