Educational Background
Ousmane Sonko received his baccalaureate in 1993 and graduated with a master’s degree in Juridical Science from Gaston Berger University in Saint-Louis in 1999. He also attended the National School of Administration and the Judiciary.
Career
Before entering politics, Ousmane Sonko worked for 15 years as a tax inspector in Pikine. He later became a whistleblower, exposing the use of offshore tax havens. In 2014, he founded the African Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics, and Fraternity (PASTEF). Sonko served as a member of the National Assembly from 2017 to 2022 and was elected Mayor of Ziguinchor in 2022.

Ousmane Sonko faced sexual assault accusations in 2019, triggering mass protests and rioting across Senegal. In June 2023, he was sentenced to two years in prison, and his party PASTEF was dissolved by the Senegalese government.
