He studied at Dartmouth College and at Harvard University.

He finished high school and began sporadically attending college, while earning a living as a spinner, shoemaker, country teacher, editor of a country newspaper, and farmer.

He also wrote poetry, but failed to get his poems published.

In 1912, he sold his farm, gave up his teaching position at the New Hampshire State Normal School, and left for England , where he met such poets as Edward Thomas, Lascelles Abercrombie, and Rupert Brooke. He enlisted the help of all of them to publish the first two volumes of his poetry: a selection of poems entitled A Boy’s Will (1913) and a series of dramatic monologues grouped under the title North Boston (1914).

He returned to the United States in 1915. He continued his poetry and lived on various farms in Vermont and New Hampshire, while teaching literature at various universities. Among his volumes of poetry, it is worth noting Intervals in the mountains (1916), The stream that flows to the west (1928), A mountain range from beyond (1936), Mask of reason (1945) and In the clearing (1962). He received the Pulitzer Prize four times (1924, 1931, 1937, 1943).
