Educational Background
Al-Makura’s educational journey began at Dunama Primary School in Lafia, where he received his early education from 1959 to 1966. He then proceeded to Keffi Teacher’s College from 1967 to 1971 and later attended the Government Teachers College of Education, Uyo, from 1972 to 1975. In 1975, he briefly worked as an Assistant Producer at the Broadcasting Corporation of Northern Nigeria before pursuing higher education. He enrolled at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1975 and graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Education Degree.
Career
In 1978, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura established Almakura Nigeria Limited, a company focused on importing and servicing agricultural and industrial machinery. He later ventured into real estate and property development as the owner and chairman of Ta’al Nigeria Limited, with properties in Abuja, Lagos, Kano, and Washington DC, United States. Notably, he owns the Ta’al Lake Resort in Abuja and the Ta’al Conference Hotel in Lafia.
Umaru Tanko Al-Makura’s political journey began in 1980 when he became the youth leader of the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the old Plateau State. He was elected to the Constitution Assembly of 1988–89, representing the Lafia–Obi Federal Constituency of what is now Nasarawa State. He also served as the state secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) party in Plateau State from 1990 to 1992. Al-Makura played a key role as a founding member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Nasarawa State in 1998.
In 2011, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura was elected as the Governor of Nasarawa State, Nigeria, running on the Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) ticket. He defeated the incumbent governor, Aliyu Akwe-Doma of the PDP. He served as Governor from 29 May 2011 to 29 May 2019. Following his tenure as Governor, he was elected as a Senator for Nasarawa State South district in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.

During his time as Governor, Umaru Tanko Al-Makura faced an impeachment struggle in 2014. The Nasarawa State House of Assembly served an impeachment notice to him, alleging gross misconduct. The impeachment was supported by the PDP members but opposed by the APC members. However, he survived the impeachment attempt.
