Educational Background
Uche Nnaji completed his primary education at Santa Maria Primary School (now Ziks Avenue Primary School) in Enugu, Nigeria. He then pursued his secondary education at St. Patrick’s College in Emene, Enugu. Following his secondary schooling, he attended the University of Nigeria’s Nsukka Campus for further studies.
Career
Uche Nnaji made a name for himself in the business world by securing key contracts for the purchase, installation, and commissioning of specialized hospital-grade plumbing and sanitary wares for the then-NEW UNTH, ITUKU/OZALLA. He also actively participated in contracts related to medical equipment installation and procurement, establishing a positive presence in the industry. His early involvement in the hospital and medical installation sectors placed him in a strong entrepreneurial position, allowing him to learn the value of patience and humility from senior executives. Notably, he became the youngest and first African to have a CT scan for Nigeria in the mid-1980s.
Uche Nnaji’s political journey has been eventful and marked with both victories and controversies. During the UNCP/GDM/DPN political era, he defied orders from the then-military administrator of Enugu State to support Chief Jim Nwobodo and deal a crushing loss to Senator Ken Nnamani. His opposition activities led to his imprisonment for nearly four months, but he regained his freedom when General Abdulsalam Abubakar became the Head of State after General Abacha’s death.
Uche Nnaji played a significant role in the establishment of the PDP in Enugu State during the early days of party politics in 1998. He vied for the position of Senator in the PDP’s Enugu East Senatorial Zone, but due to a name change and perceived injustice, he switched to the Alliance for Democracy (AD) shortly before the election. He managed to defeat the PDP candidate, Senator Ken Nnamani, in 65 out of 66 wards.
Some of Uche Nnaji’s accomplishments in politics include winning the election as Senator for Enugu East Senatorial Zone (which he later unconditionally relinquished to HE Chief Jim Nwobodo), being a foundation member of the PDPSouth East Zone, convener of PDP Enugu State, and a member of various committees within PDP and other political parties.
