Educational Background
Betta Edu hails from Abi Local Government Area in Cross River State. She completed her secondary education at the Federal Government Girls College, Calabar in 2001. In 2009, she obtained her first degree in medicine and surgery from the University of Calabar. She also holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Health for Developing Countries from the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, a master’s degree in Public Health in Developing Countries from the same institution, and a Doctor of Public Health from Texila American University.
Career
In 2015, Betta Edu became the youngest person to be appointed as the Special Adviser to the Executive Governor of Cross River State on Community and Primary Healthcare. In 2020, she became the chairman of the Cross River State COVID-19 Taskforce and was appointed the National Chairman of the Nigeria Health Commissioners Forum in the same year. She is a Fellow of the Royal School of Public Health and the African Institute of Public Health Professionals.
Betta Edu received several awards, including the Nigeria Quintessential Woman Award from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in 2020, the Award of Excellence from the National Youth Council of Nigeria in 2020, and the Award of Excellence in Gender Inclusion from the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs in 2023.

In 2020, Betta Edu faced controversy when she was accused of posting fake photos of ventilators. The Cross River state chapter of the Nigerian Medical Association passed a vote of no confidence on her, alleging professional misconduct during the COVID-19 pandemic.
