Career
Dennis Schroder embarked on his basketball journey in 2010 within the German professional leagues, specifically playing for SG Braunschweig, a developmental team associated with the BBL’s Phantoms Braunschweig.
His scoring average surged from 7.8 to 17.8 points per game between his first and second seasons, earning him the BBL most improved player honors during his third year. Following this success, Schroder declared for the 2013 NBA Draft.
In the NBA, Schroder was selected by the Atlanta Hawks as the 17th overall pick in the 2013 Draft. Initially, he spent time in the D-League with the Bakersfield Jam during his rookie season before playing 49 regular-season games for the Hawks. Schroder’s game flourished during the 2014-2015 season, consistently scoring in double digits. The subsequent year saw Schroder expanding his role on a Hawks team that made the playoffs but eventually fell to the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Beginning in 2016, Schroder became the starting point guard for the Hawks following Jeff Teague’s departure. Noteworthy performances filled his game log, including a career-high 41 points against the Utah Jazz in 2018. However, Schroder’s tenure with the Hawks concluded after the 2017-2018 season when he was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder in a three-team deal involving the Philadelphia 76ers.
The trade to OKC offered Schroder a change of scenery away from top Eastern Conference teams like the Milwaukee Bucks and Boston Celtics. Yet, it also placed him in competition with skilled young point guards such as Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks and Lonzo Ball of the New Orleans Pelicans. Additionally, the trade shifted Schroder back to a backup point guard role, supporting first Russell Westbrook and later Chris Paul. Nonetheless, he found himself on a playoff team alongside talented players like Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Steven Adams.
Throughout his career, Schroder has showcased his abilities against the NBA’s strongest teams. Notably, he recorded a double-double with 24 points and 10 assists against the Los Angeles Lakers in 2015. In a close playoff loss to the Washington Wizards led by John Wall, Schroder contributed 29 points and 11 assists. Moreover, he achieved a career-high 11 rebounds in 2019 against the Memphis Grizzlies, known for their prowess in rebounding.
