Nwifuru’s political career began in 2007 when he contested to represent his state constituency in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly but lost. He was later appointed as an Ex-Officio State Executive Member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State.
In March 2011, he won the election to represent the Izzi West Constituency at the Ebonyi State House of Assembly. He was re-elected in 2015 and 2019 and became the only member to have returned as a two-time Speaker in the history of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.

In January 2024, theSupreme Court affirmed Francis Nwifuru of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected Governor of Ebonyi State. In a judgment led by Justice Tijjani Abubakar, the court found the appeals brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate, Chief Ifeanyi Odii, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Prof. Benard Odoh, to be completely without merit and thus dismissed them.
Controversies
In March 2016, there were rumors that Nwifuru was arrested by the Economic Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), but he denied the allegation, stating that he only honored an invitation from the EFCC at its South-East zonal office in Enugu.
