Educational Background
Born in October 1950, Ibrahim attended primary school from 1957 and later Government College in Maiduguri. He obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Quantity Surveying from Ahmadu Bello University in 1975, followed by post-graduate professional training in the United Kingdom from 1981 to 1982.
Career
Contesting and winning the gubernatorial election in December 1991, Ibrahim held the position until November 1993 when the military took control. He was re-elected in 1999, serving two consecutive terms until 2007, making significant changes to the state’s emirate structure. In 2007, Bukar Abba Ibrahim was elected to the Senate for the Yobe East constituency. He successfully ran for re-election in the April 9, 2011, Senatorial contest.
Controversies
During his first term as governor in 1993, Ibrahim split Yobe State’s four emirates into 13, a decision reversed by the military regime of Sani Abacha. In his second term, he re-implemented the new emirates, facing protests but eventually prevailing in the court.
