Onu began his education at Izzi High School in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, excelling in his studies. He furthered his education at the University of Lagos, graduating with a first-class degree in chemical engineering in 1976. He pursued his doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Doctor of Philosophy degree in chemical engineering in 1980.

After completing his studies, Onu embarked on a teaching career, initially at St. Augustine’s Seminary, Ezzamgbo, Ebonyi State, before becoming a lecturer at the University of Port Harcourt. He later served as the pioneer head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and acted as the dean of the Faculty of Engineering at the university.
In the political arena, Onu began as an aspirant for a senatorial seat in the old Imo State under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN). He later served as the first civilian governor of Abia State from January 1992 to November 1993. Throughout his career, he held various positions within political parties, including serving as the presidential flag bearer for the All People’s Party in 1999. He also served as the Minister of Science and Technology of Nigeria under President Muhammadu Buhari from November 2015 to May 2022.
