Brown began his career as a gospel singer in Toccoa, Georgia. He rose to prominence in the mid-1950s as the lead singer of the Famous Flames, a rhythm and blues vocal group founded by Bobby Byrd. Brown recorded and released 17 singles that reached No. 1 on the Billboard R&B charts.He also holds the record for the most singles listed on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that did not reach No. 1.

Brown’s personal life was marred by numerous brushes with the law. At the age of 16, he was convicted of theft, and served three years in juvenile prison.Brown was arrested on April 3, 1988, for assault,and again in May 1988 on drug and weapons charges, and again on September 24, 1988, following a high-speed car chase on Interstate 20 near the Georgia–South Carolina state border. In 2004, Brown was arrested again on charges of domestic violence against Hynie his wife but he debunked it that he loved her very much to do that.
