Jonah Ogunniyi Otunla OFR (12 June 1955 – 17 June 2024) he was born in present-day Oyo State, southwestern Nigeria. was a prominent Nigerian financial accountant and the former Accountant General of the Federation of Nigeria. He also served as a board member of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

Educational Background

Otunla completed his secondary education at Baptist High School, Saki, obtaining the West African School Certificate in 1972. He then attended Obafemi Awolowo University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in financial accounting. In 1986, Otunla became a chartered accountant and was later awarded a fellowship by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria in 1998.

Career

Otunla began his career in August 1980 with Unilever as an accountant. He left Unilever in 1989 to join the Oyo State civil service as Chief Internal Auditor, and that same year, he became the Director of Finance. In June 1989, he was appointed Accountant General of Oyo State, a position he held until March 2004, when he transferred to the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation. On June 28, 2011, Otunla was appointed Accountant General of the Federation by then-President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. He retired from the Civil Service on June 12, 2015, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 60.
