Educational Background
Bachelor’s degree in law from the University of Benin, Edo State, obtained in 1992. He was called to the Nigerian bar in 1993. Served in the National Youth Service Corps in Kano State.
Career
Olumide Akpata began his legal career in Delta State under the guidance of Dr. Mudiaga Odje, Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), OFR. In 1996, he relocated to Lagos and co-founded the law firm Templars with his cousin, Oghogho Akpata.
He joined Templars at the age of 23 and has played a significant role in growing the firm into one of Nigeria’s largest law firms.
Currently, he serves as the Senior Partner and Head of the Corporate & Commercial Practice Group at Templars.Akpata has been involved in major groundbreaking transactions that have shaped commercial law practice in Nigeria and contributed to the Nigerian economy. He served as the Chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association Section on Business Law (NBA-SBL).
On July 30, 2020, Olumide Akpata was elected as the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, securing 9,891 votes out of 18,256 ballots cast. His election marked a historic moment as the first non-SAN President in nearly three decades.
On August 1, 2023, Olumide Akpata formally entered the political arena by joining the Labour Party (Nigeria).
