CARDINAL JOHN NJUE BIOGRAPHY
Born on January 1, 1946, in Embu, Kenya, to Joseph Nyanga Kibariki and Monica Ngina Nyaga. He was baptized in 1948 and entered the minor seminary in Nkubu in 1962, where he began his journey toward the priesthood.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Njue pursued further studies in Rome from 1967 to 1974 at the Pontifical Urbaniana University, obtaining a licentiate in philosophy, and at the Pontifical Lateran University, where he earned a licentiate in pastoral theology. In 1982, he completed a course in spirituality in the United States, which further enhanced his theological training.
CAREER
On January 6, 1973, Njue was ordained to the priesthood by Pope Paul VI in St. Peter’s Basilica. Upon his return to Kenya in October 1974, he engaged in pastoral work in Kariakomu in the southern district of Meru. He later taught philosophy at the National Seminary of Bungoma, where he served as rector from 1978 to 1982.
Njue also served as a parish priest in Chuka and became the rector of the Philosophical Seminary of Meru. On June 9, 1986, Pope John Paul II appointed Njue as the Bishop of Embu. He was consecrated as a bishop on September 20, 1986, by Cardinal Jozef Tomko.
Njue’s significant contributions to the Church and community led to his appointment as the fourth Archbishop of Nairobi in 2007. He was elevated to the rank of cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI the same year.
