His father, Kgosi Augustine Motsepe, was a chief of the Mmakau branch of the Tswana people and a schoolteacher who later turned into a small businessman.

Motsepe attended the University of Swaziland, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He furthered his education at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where he earned a law degree and specialized in mining and business law.

He began his professional career as a lawyer at the prestigious Bowman Gilfillan law firm, where he became the first black partner in 1994.

In 1997, taking advantage of post-apartheid South Africa’s Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) laws, Motsepe founded African Rainbow Minerals (ARM). Motsepe also serves as the non-executive chairman of Harmony Gold, one of the world’s largest gold mining companies, and deputy chairman of Sanlam, a major financial services group.

In 2003, Motsepe purchased Mamelodi Sundowns, a top South African football club. Under his ownership, the club has achieved remarkable success, winning multiple Premier Soccer League (PSL) titles and the CAF Champions League in 2016.

Motsepe is also deeply involved in philanthropy. In 2013, he joined The Giving Pledge, committing to donate half of his wealth to charitable causes, such as education, healthcare, and social welfare. Through the Motsepe Foundation, which he co-founded with his wife, Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe.

In March 2021, Motsepe was elected as the President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), becoming the first South African to hold this position.
