DR DRE BIOGRAPHY
Andre Romell Young, known professionally as Dr. Dre, was born on February 18, 1965, in Compton, California. His middle name, Romell, was derived from his father’s amateur R&B group, the Romells. Dr. Dre was raised in a family that valued music, and he grew up during a time when Compton became infamous for gang violence.
His parents, Theodore and Verna Young, separated in 1968 and divorced in 1972. His mother later remarried, and Dre gained half-siblings, including two brothers, Jerome and Tyree (both deceased), and a sister, Shameka.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Dre initially attended Vanguard Junior High in Compton but was transferred to Roosevelt Junior High in a safer neighborhood due to escalating gang violence. He later attended Centennial High School but transferred to Fremont High School in South Central Los Angeles due to poor academic performance.
He also briefly pursued an apprenticeship at Northrop Aviation Company but was deemed ineligible due to his grades. It was during these years that Dre began to focus on music and entertainment.
CAREER
In 1984, Dr. Dre began his music career as a member of the World Class Wreckin’ Cru, a group known for its electro-hop sound. However, his major breakthrough came when he joined the gangsta rap group N.W.A. (Niggaz Wit Attitudes) in 1986, alongside Ice Cube, Eazy-E, DJ Yella, and MC Ren. Their album Straight Outta Compton (1988) became a cultural phenomenon, cementing Dre’s role as a key figure in the burgeoning West Coast rap scene.
Dr. Dre’s success as a solo artist came in 1992 with the release of his debut solo album The Chronic. Released under Death Row Records, which he co-founded with Suge Knight, the album introduced the G-funk sound, characterized by heavy bass lines, synthesizers, and laid-back beats.
In 1996, Dre left Death Row Records amid growing tensions and founded his own label, Aftermath Entertainment. His first major signing was Eminem in 1998, followed by 50 Cent in 2002, both of whom became international superstars under Dre’s mentorship.
In addition to his music career, Dr. Dre co-founded Beats Electronics with music executive Jimmy Iovine in 2006. Dr. Dre has also ventured into acting, appearing in films such as Set It Off (1996), The Wash (2001), and Training Day (2001). While his acting career is not as prominent as his music endeavors, his appearances contributed to his visibility in popular culture.
CONTROVERSIES
Dr. Dre’s career has not been without controversy. In 1991, he physically assaulted TV host Dee Barnes, which led to public outrage and legal consequences. Dre was fined, placed on probation, and ordered to complete community service. This incident, along with other allegations of violence against women, has been widely publicized and criticized.
Michel’le, the mother of one of his children, also accused Dre of domestic violence during their relationship, a story that was portrayed in her biopic Surviving Compton: Dre, Suge & Michel’le (2016). In recent years, Dre has publicly acknowledged his past behavior, expressing regret for his actions.
