IBRAHIM AMIN BIOGRAPHY
Amine al-Sayyed was born in the village of Haouch al-Nabi in the Baalbek District of eastern Lebanon.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
He pursued a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Lebanese University in Beirut, graduating in 1981. He then moved to France, where he earned a Master’s Degree in Physical Chemistry from the University of Strasbourg in 1984. His academic journey culminated in 1987 when he obtained a PhD in Chemistry and Physics from the University of Orleans.
CAREER
After completing his doctoral studies, al-Sayyed returned to Lebanon in 1987. He began his academic career as a professor at Lebanese University, where he taught at the Colleges of Science, Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacology.
Al-Sayyed’s political career began in the early 1980s when he joined the Amal Movement, a prominent political party in Lebanon. He served as the party’s representative in Iran during this period. However, in a significant turn of events, he publicly criticized Amal’s leader, Nabih Berri, during a press conference in Tehran at the behest of the Islamic Republic, leading to his defection from the party.
In 1988, al-Sayyed supported Sheikh Subhi al-Tufaili in a dispute with Ayatollah Mohammad Hussein Fadlallah over the establishment of an Islamic republic in Lebanon. Al-Tufaili argued for the immediate creation of such a republic, while Fadlallah opposed this view. Over time, particularly with the signing of the Taef Agreement, Fadlallah’s position appeared to evolve.
In 1994, Ibrahim Amine al-Sayyed was instrumental in establishing Hezbollah’s Islamic Center Association for Guidance and Higher Education. His influence within the party grew, and he was elected to Hezbollah’s Shura Council during the party’s sixth conclave in July 2001. He succeeded Mohammad Raad as the head of the Political Council and has maintained that position since then.
CONTROVERSIES
Ibrahim Amine al-Sayyed has been involved in several controversies throughout his political career, primarily related to his shifting allegiances and ideological position – Defection from Amal, dispute with Fadallah, Hezbollah leadership and regional tensions.
