Controversies

Ogiame Atuwatse III’s ascension to the throne was not without controversy. One significant challenge arose due to a 1979 edict stating that the mother of the Olu of Warri must have Itsekiri or Benin origins. His mother’s Yoruba heritage caused resistance from some factions, particularly from the former Ologbotsere of Warri, Chief Ayiri Emami, who argued for the traditional order of succession.

Despite this, Ogiame Atuwatse III received overwhelming support from other key stakeholders, leading to his successful coronation. Another notable event was the alleged theft of the 400-year-old Olu of Warri crown just before his coronation, although this did not affect the ceremony as there were multiple crowns available.
