Oguchialu Chijioke Onyewu was born on May 13, 1982, in Owerri, Nigeria, to Nigerian parents of Igbo descent. At a young age, his family moved to the United States, settling in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., specifically in Silver Spring and Olney, Maryland.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Onyewu attended St. Andrew Apostle School before enrolling at Sherwood High School. He later participated in the U.S. residency program in Bradenton, Florida, which further enhanced his training and exposure to competitive soccer. After completing his education at Sherwood High, he played college soccer for two years at Clemson University in South Carolina.
CAREER
In 2002, Onyewu moved to Europe to pursue a professional career in soccer, signing with FC Metz in France’s Ligue 2. His talent quickly became evident, and in 2003, he was loaned to La Louvière in Belgium, where he continued to impress with his defensive skills. His notable clubs included Standard Liège, Milan, Newcastle United, and Charlton Athletic.
