Educational Background
Sinwar grew up in the Khan Yunis refugee camp in the Gaza Strip, which was then under Egyptian administration. He completed his early education at the Khan Yunis Secondary School for Boys before earning a bachelor’s degree in Arabic studies from the Islamic University of Gaza.
Career
Sinwar was a co-founder of Hamas’s internal security apparatus and a long-time member of the group’s armed wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades. Arrested in 1989 by Israeli authorities, he was sentenced to multiple life terms for orchestrating the kidnapping and killing of two Israeli soldiers and several Palestinians. While in prison, he continued coordinating Hamas operations, including targeting suspected collaborators with Israel.
