Educational Background
Ata began his education at Fagge Primary School (1968–1975) and continued at Aminu Kano Community Commercial College, completing his secondary education in 1980. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Economics (1984) and a Master’s in Development Studies (2001) from Bayero University, Kano (BUK).
Career
Ata initially worked as a classroom teacher before transitioning to the Kano State Ministry of Education in 1992, where he served as a Business Education inspector. In 1997, he joined the Kano State Housing Corporation as a Principal Planning Officer. However, his focus soon turned to politics, leading him to leave civil service in 1998.
Ata entered politics in 1999, winning a seat in the Kano State House of Assembly to represent Fagge constituency as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Although he lost his seat in 2003, Ata successfully contested in the 2011 and 2015 elections. He became Majority Leader in 2015 and later, in 2017, assumed the role of Speaker following the resignation of Kabiru Alhassan Rurum. Despite efforts to remove him, Ata’s tenure as Speaker lasted until his impeachment in July 2018. He later ran in the 2019 general elections but was defeated by Tukur Muhammad of the PDP.
