Born Sunita Lyn Williams, in Euclid, Ohio, to a multicultural family. Her father, Deepak Pandya, is an Indian-American, and her mother, Bonnie Pandya, is of Slovenian descent. She grew up in Needham, Massachusetts, and excelled academically and athletically from a young age.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
She graduated from Needham High School in 1983 and pursued her undergraduate education at the United States Naval Academy, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Science in 1987. She later obtained a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from the Florida Institute of Technology in 1995.
CAREER
Williams was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy in 1987. She began her career as a helicopter pilot, flying the CH-46 Sea Knight, and participated in various operations, including support roles during the Gulf War. Her experience and expertise in aviation eventually paved the way for her selection as a NASA astronaut in 1998.
Sunita Williams joined NASA in 1998 and quickly became a standout in the astronaut program. She has participated in two long-duration missions aboard the International Space Station (ISS), accumulating a total of 322 days in space.
Expedition 14/15 (2006-2007)- Williams launched aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery (STS-116) in December 2006. Williams also famously ran a marathon on the ISS treadmill during the Boston Marathon.
Expedition 32/33 (2012)- In July 2012, she launched aboard Soyuz TMA-05M. She served as the flight engineer for Expedition 32 and the commander of Expedition 33, becoming one of the few women to command the ISS.During this mission, she conducted three spacewalks and contributed to critical research and station operations.
Williams has completed seven spacewalks, totaling over 50 hours and 40 minutes, holding the record for cumulative spacewalk time by a woman until 2017. Currently, Sunita Williams is a key participant in NASA’s Commercial Crew Program.
