In 1974, he joined the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) and its military wing, the People’s Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN). Following independence in 1990, he became the first military assistant to the Chief of the Defence Force and quickly ascended through the ranks.

He served as Deputy Commander of the Army, later becoming Chief of the Defence Force, where he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General. In addition to his military service, Ndaitwah also served as Namibia’s Chargé d’Affaires to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
