Born in 1950 in Entotto, near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, His fascination with the instrument began at the age of 12, influenced by Aleqa Tessema Welde-Emmanuel, a bèguèna master who lived near his family.

Under Tessema’s mentorship, Alemu learned the intricate techniques and spiritual significance of the instrument while attending Ras Desta School, where his mentor taught.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Alemu pursued higher education in geography at Addis Ababa University. After graduating, he worked as a geography teacher and later joined the Yared Music School, where he taught bèguèna for seven years.
