Born in 1950 in Entotto, near Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, His fascination with the instrument began at the age of 12, influenced by Aleqa Tessema Welde-Emmanuel, a bèguèna master who lived near his family.
Under Tessema’s mentorship, Alemu learned the intricate techniques and spiritual significance of the instrument while attending Ras Desta School, where his mentor taught.
