Jimmy attended the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, graduating in 1946. He served as a submarine officer in the Navy, including work on nuclear-powered submarines, until 1953, when he returned to Plains to manage his family’s peanut business after his father’s death.

CAREER

Career

Carter began his political career in 1962 when he was elected to the Georgia State Senate, where he served two terms. In 1970, he became the 76th Governor of Georgia, promoting racial equality and government efficiency.

In 1976, Carter launched a campaign for the presidency, positioning himself as a Washington outsider in the post-Watergate era. He narrowly defeated incumbent President Gerald Ford to become the 39th president.

Carter left office in 1981 and became a global humanitarian leader, establishing one of the most active and impactful post-presidential careers in U.S. history.

Jimmy and his wife Rosalynn have worked extensively with their organization, building homes for underserved communities. In 2002, Carter received the Nobel Peace Prize for his work in resolving conflicts, advancing democracy, and promoting human rights worldwide.

CONTROVERSIES

Controversies

One of his most notable challenge was the Iran Hostage Crisis (1979–1981), where 52 Americans were held hostage, severely damaged his presidency. The Soviet invasion of Afghanistan led to strained U.S.-Soviet relations and the U.S. boycott of the 1980 Moscow Olympics.

Carter also lost his re-election bid in 1980 to Ronald Reagan, in part due to economic struggles and the ongoing hostage crisis.
