Educational Background
Kindiki’s educational journey began at Lenana School, where he initially scored a Grade C in his KCSE exams. Determined to meet university entry requirements, he retook the exams at Tharaka Boys High School in Meru District. In 1998, he graduated with a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from Moi University. He went on to earn a Master of Laws (LLM) in International Human Rights Law and Democracy from the University of Pretoria in 2000. Furthering his studies, he obtained a PhD in International Law from the same institution in 2002. He also completed a postgraduate diploma in legal studies at the Kenya School of Law in 2001, qualifying him as an advocate.
Career
Kindiki began his professional career as a law lecturer at Moi University in 1999. In 2004, he joined the University of Nairobi before returning to Moi University in 2005 to lead the Public Law Department. Transitioning into politics, he was elected as the first Senator for Tharaka-Nithi County in 2013, a role he held until 2022.
He later served as Cabinet Secretary for Interior and National Administration, where he oversaw crucial security and governance matters. In 2024, he was sworn in as Deputy President of Kenya following the impeachment of his predecessor.
Controversies
Kindiki’s ascension to the role of Deputy President was not without challenges. His predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, was impeached by parliament on charges of constitutional violations and inciting ethnic tensions. The impeachment process was followed by numerous legal challenges from Gachagua and his supporters, delaying Kindiki’s inauguration. Despite the legal hurdles, the courts ultimately lifted the stay order, allowing his swearing-in to proceed.
