Educational Background

Okiro holds a degree in English Language from the University of Ibadan and a Master’s in Public Administration from the University of Lagos. He also earned an LLB and LLM from the University of Jos. Career

Mike Okiro began his policing career in 1977, serving in various operational and command roles, including as Divisional Police Officer (DPO) in multiple stations and as a member of the Lagos State Armed Robbery and Firearms Tribunal. He held key leadership positions such as Assistant and Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Lagos and Benue States before earning a double promotion from Commissioner of Police to Deputy Inspector General of Police.

During his tenure as Inspector General of Police, Okiro focused on improving police welfare, fostering public trust, and enhancing national security to support Nigeria’s economic aspirations. His initiatives included creating The Dawn newspaper to improve police-public relations, reinstating unjustly retired officers, and advocating for better pay, housing, and equipment for police personnel.

Okiro also authored the book Policing Nigeria in a Democracy and played pivotal roles in addressing major security issues, including the Niger Delta crisis, which significantly improved Nigeria’s oil production.

Controversies

In 2009, the House Committee on Police Affairs requested details of recovered funds from the former Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun, which Okiro redirected to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Later, in 2015, he faced allegations of misappropriating N275 million from the Police Service Commission.

However, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) cleared him of all charges. Mike Mbama Okiro’s bid for the Ohanaeze Ndigbo presidency has also garnered both support and controversy.
