JOSEPH AOUN BIOGRAPHY

Aoun hails from a Maronite Christian family originally from the town of Al-Aaishiyah in Southern Lebanon.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

He completed his secondary education at the Collège des Frères Mont La Salle. In 1983, he joined the Lebanese Army Military Academy, earning a bachelor’s degree in military science. Aoun obtained a bachelor’s degree in political science and international affairs from the Lebanese American University in 2007.

CAREER

Throughout his military career, Aoun held various significant positions within the LAF. He served in the Special Forces and ascended through the ranks to become a brigade commander. In March 2017, he was appointed as the Commander of the Lebanese Armed Forces. During his tenure, Aoun steered the army through numerous challenges, including battles against Islamist militants, the Beirut port explosion in 2020, and Lebanon’s severe financial crisis, which notably impacted soldiers’ salaries.

On January 9, 2025, following a two-year presidential vacancy, Joseph Aoun was elected as the President of Lebanon, securing 99 out of 128 votes in the parliamentary election. His election was supported by various international stakeholders, including the United States and Saudi Arabia.

Throughout his service, Aoun has received several honors, including the War Medal (three-time recipient), Medal of the Wounded (two-time recipient), Medal of National Unity, and the Military Valour Medal (Silver).
