He was the son of Richard Mabuo Akwei, the founder of the Ghana National School, and Susana Awula Abla Moore. His parents named him after Warren Gamaliel Harding, the 29th President of the United States. Ghanaba changed his name multiple times throughout his life to reflect his evolving identity and commitment to African culture.

In 1943, he adopted the name Guy Warren. While in the United States, he became known as Guy Warren of Ghana. On July 1, 1974, Ghana’s Republic Day, he renamed himself Kofi Ghanaba, symbolizing his pride in Ghanaian heritage.

EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Ghanaba attended Government Boys’ School, Accra (1928–1939), where he developed an interest in music and joined the school band. Odorgonno Secondary School (1940), where he continued to nurture his musical passion, becoming a drummer with the Accra Rhythmic Orchestra under Yeboah Mensah. He also attended Achimota College, Accra (1941), on a government scholarship to train as a teacher. However, he left in 1942 to pursue his musical aspirations.

In the early 1950s, Ghanaba moved to the United Kingdom and later the United States, where he became a key figure in introducing African music to the jazz world. He collaborated with several renowned jazz artists, including Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, and Thelonious Monk, helping them incorporate African rhythms into their compositions. In 1956, Ghanaba released “Africa Speaks, America Answers”, an innovative album that fused traditional African drumming with jazz.

Ghanaba was deeply committed to promoting African culture and identity. He often wore traditional Ghanaian attire and used his music to celebrate African heritage. His works were infused with themes of Pan-Africanism and spirituality. He also introduced the idea of “talking drums” in jazz, which communicated stories and emotions through rhythm.
