Born on September 1, 1960, in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, Eric was raised in a working-class family by his mother, Dorothy Mae Adams-Streeter, who worked as a housecleaner, and his father, Leroy Adams, a butcher who struggled with alcoholism. His parents had moved to New York City from Alabama in the 1950s in search of better opportunities. Adams spent his childhood in a rat-infested tenement in Bushwick, Brooklyn, experiencing poverty and hardship.

Adams transitioned into politics in 2006 when he was elected to the New York State Senate, representing Brooklyn’s 20th district. During his time in office, he championed progressive policies, including tenant protections, gun control measures, and criminal justice reforms, particularly focusing on the misuse of stop-and-frisk policies by the NYPD.

In 2013, Adams made history by becoming the first Black person elected as Brooklyn Borough President. In 2021, Adams won the Democratic nomination for Mayor of New York City and subsequently defeated Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa in the general election. Taking office on January 1, 2022, he prioritized public safety, economic recovery, and homelessness.
