That same year, he moved to Nigerian Universal Bank Limited as an Accountant Supervisor. In 1997, he transitioned to the private sector, joining Nalado Nigeria Limited as Chief Accountant, eventually rising to the role of Director of Finance and Administration by 2007.

His political career took off when he was appointed Commissioner of Finance in Kaduna State in 2007 under Governor Namadi Sambo. When Sambo became Nigeria’s vice president in 2010, Patrick Yakowa took over as governor and selected Yero as his deputy. Following Yakowa’s death in a helicopter crash in 2012, Yero was sworn in as the governor of Kaduna State.
