SULEIMAN HUNKUYI BIOGRAPHY

Suleiman Othman Hunkuyi was born on July 17, 1959, in Hunkuyi, Kudan Local Government Area, Kaduna State, Nigeria.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

He attended Kafanchan Teachers College, where he obtained his Grade II Certificate in 1977. He later furthered his education at Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Education in 1986.
CAREER

Hunkuyi started his professional journey as a primary and secondary school teacher before venturing into politics during the Third Republic under General Ibrahim Babangida’s regime.
In the early 1990s, he became Chairman of Makarfi Local Government Area under the National Republican Convention (NRC) and also served as the State Chairman of the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON). His political influence grew as he played a key role in the election of Governor Mohammed Dabo Lere and Deputy Governor James Bawa Magaji.
With the return of democracy in 1999, Hunkuyi was instrumental in the formation of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Kaduna State, which led to the election of Ahmed Makarfi as Governor. He was appointed Commissioner for Finance under Makarfi’s administration but later resigned due to disagreements over state policies.
CONTROVERSIES

Over the years, Hunkuyi contested multiple times for the governorship seat in Kaduna State but was unsuccessful. However, in 2015, he was elected as a Senator representing Kaduna North Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress (APC).
During his time in the Senate, he became a strong critic of Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s administration, particularly on education policies and taxation issues. Their rivalry escalated in 2018 when the Kaduna State Government demolished his property, which housed an APC factional office, a move many saw as politically motivated.
His disagreements with the APC led to his suspension from the party in 2018, after which he defected to the PDP. He later left PDP and joined the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in 2022, where he became the party’s gubernatorial candidate for the 2023 Kaduna State elections.
In February 2025, he and other politicians returned to the APC, citing the inclusive leadership of Governor Uba Sani as a key factor in their decision.
