DOYIN OKUPE BIOGRAPHY

Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Nigeria. Adedoyin was born into the family of Chief Matthew Adekoya Okupe, a banker with Agbonmagbe Bank.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

He attended St. Jude’s School in Ebute Metta, Lagos, and Igbobi College in Yaba, Lagos, for his secondary education. He furthered his studies at the University of Ibadan, where he earned a degree in medicine.
CAREER

After completing his medical education, Okupe worked at various hospitals, including St. Nicholas Hospital in Lagos. He co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Obalende, Lagos, alongside his colleagues Dr. Seyi Roberts and Dr. Ladi Okuboyejo, where he served as the Managing Director.
Political Career
Okupe ventured into politics during the Second Nigerian Republic, contesting for a seat in the House of Representatives under the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) in the 1983 elections. In the Third Nigerian Republic, he served as the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC). He was appointed Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and later served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan.
CONTROVERSIES

Throughout his career, Okupe faced several controversies. In August 2012, his companies were investigated by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over allegations of unexecuted road construction contracts awarded in 2004 and 2005 by Benue and Imo States, respectively. In July 2016, he was implicated in the $2 billion arms deal scandal, with the EFCC alleging that ₦702 million was traced to him. On December 19, 2022, a Federal High Court found Okupe guilty of breaching the Money Laundering Act and sentenced him to two years imprisonment with an option of a fine, which he paid.

Okupe was married to Aduralere Okupe, and they had two children, Ditan and Bolu. In January 2021, his son Bolu publicly came out as gay, a revelation that attracted significant public attention.
