Additionally, in 2009, he distanced himself from a controversy involving the failure to name directors of collapsed banks implicated in insider loan abuses amounting to N94.4 billion, stating he had been attending an overseas conference at the time.

One of the most distressing events in his personal life occurred in 2008 when his wife was kidnapped in Uyo. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of N1 billion. She was released after several weeks, though the details of her release were not publicly disclosed.
