Adetunji Opayele, popularly known as TeeJay, was born on December 20, 1992, in Lagos, Nigeria.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Tunji attended Lagos State Model College, Meiran. Opayele pursued a law degree at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), where he met his future business partner, Kelvin Umechukwu.
CAREER

Although he trained as a lawyer, Opayele’s career took off in the tech industry. He gained experience working in various software development roles before venturing into entrepreneurship. He co-founded HostCabal, a web hosting company that provided digital solutions for Nigerian businesses.
In 2020, Opayele co-founded Bumpa, a retail automation startup, alongside his business partner Kelvin Umechukwu. Bumpa was designed to help small businesses and entrepreneurs set up online stores, manage inventory, process payments, and engage with customers through social media platforms.
Under his leadership as Chief Technology Officer (CTO), Bumpa quickly grew in prominence, processing transactions worth over ₦160 billion for more than 60,000 SMEs across Nigeria. In 2022, the company secured a $4 million seed funding round led by Base10 Partners and successfully integrated with Meta, allowing merchants to manage their Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp interactions directly on the platform.
CONTROVERSIES

The primary controversy associated with Opayele revolves around the circumstances of his untimely death. On March 5, 2025, he was involved in a fatal accident in Lagos. Reports indicate that while returning from the gym on March 4, 2025, at approximately 10:20 p.m., Opayele was riding his power bike along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road in Victoria Island when he was struck by a vehicle driven by Biola Adams-Odutayo. Adams-Odutayo allegedly merged onto the expressway without considering oncoming traffic, resulting in the collision.
Following the incident, Adams-Odutayo reportedly attempted to flee the scene, expressing concern about blood staining her car. A bystander intervened, preventing her departure and ensuring Opayele received medical attention. Despite being equipped with safety gear, Opayele sustained severe injuries and was pronounced dead shortly after midnight.
The handling of the case has sparked public outrage and demands for justice. A petition directed at the Lagos State Government has garnered over 22,000 signatures, urging authorities to address allegations of negligence and an attempted cover-up. Critics argue that charging Adams-Odutayo with reckless driving undermines the severity of the incident and fails to hold her adequately accountable.
