Olajuwon was born in Lagos, Nigeria, to Salim and Abike Olajuwon, who were Yoruba and devout Muslims. He was the third of eight children. Growing up, he played soccer and handball. He didn’t start playing basketball until he was 15. In 1980, he moved to the United States to play college basketball at the University of Houston, where he played under Coach Guy Lewis and became part of the famed “Phi Slama Jama” team alongside Clyde Drexler.

He played 17 seasons with the Rockets (1984–2001), leading them to back-to-back NBA championships in 1994 and 1995, and was named the Finals MVP both years. He won the NBA Most Valuable Player (MVP) award in 1994 and was named an NBA All-Star 12 times. He finished his career with the Toronto Raptors during the 2001–2002 season.

He is the NBA’s all-time leader in blocked shots and is ranked among the top in points, rebounds, and steals. His combination of offense and defense made him one of the most complete players in league history.
