Educational Background

Timbaland went to Salem High School in Virginia Beach. During his school years, he began exploring music and became a DJ under the name “DJ Timmy Tim.” It was in high school that he met many of the people who would become his close collaborators in the music industry.
Career

Timbaland started his career in the early 1990s and got his big break producing Ginuwine’s debut album Ginuwine, the Bachelor in 1996. His work on Aaliyah’s One in a Million and Missy Elliott’s Supa Dupa Fly helped shape the sound of late ’90s R&B and hip-hop.
He later became known for producing chart-topping hits for Justin Timberlake, including Cry Me a River, SexyBack, and Mirrors.
Timbaland also launched Beat Club and Mosley Music Group, record labels through which he helped artists like Nelly Furtado and OneRepublic rise to fame. In 2020, he teamed up with producer Swizz Beatz to launch Verzuz, a popular online music battle series. More recently, he collaborated with artist Roy Nachum to design a cutting-edge art and sound exhibit called Maestros and the Machines.
Controversies

Timbaland has faced several copyright and plagiarism issues. In 2007, he was accused of using uncredited samples in Nelly Furtado’s song Do It. He also had legal problems with the song Throw It on Me, which allegedly copied parts of “Spazz” by The Elastik Band.
In another case, Swiss musician Bruno Spoerri said Timbaland and Jay-Z used parts of his song On the Way in Versus without permission. The case was settled with an agreement to split the royalties.
