TIM WANYONYI BIOGRAPHY

Timothy Wanyonyi Wetangula was born in 1963 in Mukhweya village, located in Bungoma County, Kenya. He is the seventh child in a family of nine, born to Mzee Dominic Wetang’ula, a retired teacher. His family is well known in Kenyan politics, with his elder brother, Moses Wetang’ula, currently serving as the Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

He began his formal education at Lurende Primary School (1973–1979). He proceeded to Kibabii High School for his O-Levels (1980–1985), then advanced to Nairobi School for his A-Levels (1986–1987).
In 1988, he traveled to India for further studies, enrolling at Punjabi University where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Public Administration, Political Science, and Sociology in 1991. He later pursued a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree at the University of Delhi, graduating in 1994.
On returning to Kenya, Tim attended the Kenya School of Law, where he obtained his Postgraduate Diploma in Law in 1996, officially qualifying as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.
CAREER

Wanyonyi began his legal career at Wetang’ula & Co. Advocates, his brother’s law firm. In 2000, he founded his own practice Tim Wanyonyi & Co. Advocates.
His life took a dramatic turn in 1998 when he was shot during a carjacking in Nairobi, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. After intensive rehabilitation in Belgium, he returned to Kenya with a renewed sense of purpose and became a strong voice for disability rights. In 2004, he founded the Kenya Paraplegic Organisation (KPO) to advocate for the rights and welfare of persons with disabilities.
His political journey began in 2007 when he was elected as a City Councillor in Nairobi. He later joined national politics and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Westlands Constituency in 2013 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). He has been re-elected in 2017 and 2022, earning recognition as one of Kenya’s most effective MPs.
Tim has served in various parliamentary committees, including the Committee on Administration and National Security and the Committee on Delegated Legislation. In 2021, he was named Best Performing MP by Mizani Africa.
