Hassan Ali Joho was born on 26 February 1976 in Kisauni, Mombasa County, Kenya. He hails from a Swahili-Arab background and grew up in a modest Muslim household.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Joho began his formal education at Tom Mboya Primary School, before proceeding to Serani Secondary School in Mombasa. After completing his secondary education, he pursued further studies in Business Administration and Human Resource Management at Kampala University in Uganda. He also holds academic credentials from the University of Nairobi and completed an executive leadership course at the prestigious Harvard Kennedy School in the United States.
CAREER
Before venturing into politics, Joho was actively involved in the import and export business, as well as logistics and shipping, establishing himself as a successful entrepreneur in Mombasa.
Joho joined active politics in 2004 when he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kisauni Constituency in a by-election. He was re-elected in 2007 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) led by Raila Odinga. In 2013, Joho was elected as the first Governor of Mombasa County under Kenya’s new devolved government structure, and he was re-elected in 2017 for a second term. During his tenure as governor (2013–2022), he spearheaded numerous development initiatives, including urban infrastructure, healthcare reforms, tourism promotion, and youth empowerment programs.
