Educational Background
Ngozi Nma Odu has a strong academic background. She earned her first degree in Microbiology from Paisley College of Technology in Scotland. She later obtained a Master’s degree in Food Science and Management from the University of London (Queen Elizabeth College) in 1983. In 1989, she achieved a major milestone by becoming the first person to earn a PhD in Microbiology from the University of Port Harcourt.
Career
Ngozi Odu began her public service career in the Rivers State Ministry of Health, where she rose to the rank of Permanent Secretary between 1999 and 2006. In January 2006, she was appointed as the Commissioner for Education in Rivers State by then-Governor Peter Odili.
In the academic world, she worked as a lecturer in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Port Harcourt and also served as the first Acting Executive Director of the University of Port Harcourt Foundation. Later, she became a visiting professor at Rivers State University and Director of Academic Planning at Pamo University of Medical Sciences.
Her political journey took a new turn in June 2022 when she was picked as the running mate to Siminalayi Fubara for the 2023 gubernatorial election, which they won.

In March 2025, Ngozi Odu was suspended from her position as deputy governor, though no official reason was provided publicly at the time. This happened during a period of political crisis in Rivers State involving Governor Fubara and members of the State Assembly loyal to the Minister of the FCT, Nyesom Wike.
Rumors also spread online suggesting that she had resigned. However, her office quickly denied these claims. A statement released by her Head of Press, Owupele Benebo, made it clear that Professor Odu had not stepped down and remained committed to her role.
