Educational Background

Mike Lee graduated from Timpview High School in 1989. He went on to study political science at Brigham Young University (BYU), where he also served as student body president. He later earned his law degree from BYU’s J. Reuben Clark Law School in 1997 and was part of the law review team.
Career

After law school, Mike Lee worked as a law clerk for two federal judges, including future Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito. He later joined a private law firm in Washington, D.C., focusing on appeals and Supreme Court cases.
He returned to Utah to work as a federal prosecutor and later served as legal counsel to Governor Jon Huntsman Jr. He clerked again for Alito after his appointment to the Supreme Court before going back to private practice.
In 2010, Lee ran for U.S. Senate and beat incumbent Bob Bennett in the Republican primary. He went on to win the general election and was re-elected in both 2016 and 2022. He also served as chairman of the Joint Economic Committee between 2019 and 2021.
Controversies

Mike Lee has faced criticism over the years for a few of his decisions and statements. During his first Senate campaign, he was involved in a legal case where he represented a company trying to bring foreign radioactive waste into Utah, something many Utahns opposed.
In June 2025, Lee deleted several posts from his X (formerly Twitter) account after making controversial comments about a deadly shooting in Minnesota. He had speculated about the political leanings of the shooter and made references to Minnesota’s Democratic Governor, which sparked backlash from Democratic senators and others who said his posts were harmful and inflammatory. He was confronted directly by Sen. Tina Smith, who called the posts “cruel.”
Lee is known for his strong conservative values and is a supporter of limited government and states’ rights. Although he didn’t support Donald Trump in the 2016 election, he later became one of Trump’s allies—endorsing him in 2020 and again in 2024. He also backed Trump’s attempts to challenge the 2020 election results but still voted to certify the outcome.
