He became the captain of the Super Eagles and was even named the third-best player in Africa by CAF in 1998. After retiring, he moved into coaching. Oliseh was appointed head coach of the Nigerian national team in 2015, losing just 2 of 14 games. He stepped down in 2016, citing unpaid salaries and contract issues.

As Super Eagles coach, he clashed with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) over unpaid wages and interference, which led to his early resignation in 2016.

Recently he also has been vocal in the media, criticizing the frequent appointment of foreign coaches for Nigeria, saying qualified Nigerians are being overlooked unfairly.
