Born on September 25, 1944, in Gambari, Ibadan, Oyo State, Nigeria. He hails from a prominent Yoruba Muslim family. His father, Alhaji Aruna Ladoja, was a well-known cocoa trader, while his mother, Alhaja Haleemat Ladoja, was a respected community leader.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
Ladoja began his education at Ibadan Boys’ High School (1958–1963) before proceeding to Olivet Baptist High School (1964–1965). His quest for higher learning took him abroad, where he studied Chemical Engineering at the University of Liège in Belgium, earning his B.Sc. degree in 1972.
CAREER
After graduating, Ladoja returned to Nigeria and joined Total Nigeria in 1972. Over the next decade, he rose through the ranks, holding several managerial and technical positions until he left the company in 1985. He then ventured into business, building a diverse portfolio across sectors such as oil and gas, agriculture, shipping, banking, manufacturing, and transportation. By 2000, he had become a director at Standard Trust Bank.
His political career took off in the early 1990s when he was elected as a Senator in 1993 under the United Nigeria Congress Party (UNCP) during the short-lived Third Republic. In 2003, he was elected Governor of Oyo State under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). His tenure was marked by attempts to reform the state’s governance, though it was disrupted by intense political battles.
CONTROVERSIES
Ladoja’s time as governor was marred by political tension, particularly with his deputy Adebayo Alao-Akala and PDP power broker Lamidi Adedibu. These conflicts led to his controversial impeachment on January 12, 2006. However, the Court of Appeal reinstated him on November 1, 2006, and he completed his term in May 2007.
In 2008, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) charged him with corruption related to the alleged mismanagement of state funds during his governorship. Although the legal battle lasted for years, Ladoja maintained his innocence, and the case was eventually struck out in 2021 for lack of evidence.
He also faced criticism for frequently switching political parties. After leaving the PDP, he joined and led the Accord Party in Oyo State, later defecting to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and then the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), where he continued to play an influential role.

Rasheed Ladoja is married to Chief (Mrs.) Mutiat Olayinka Ladoja, and their marriage is blessed with six children. He is a devout Muslim and is deeply connected to his Yoruba cultural heritage.
In 2024, he was elevated to the position of Otun Olubadan, the second-in-command in the Olubadan traditional succession line. Following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan in July 2025, Ladoja is expected to become the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, the highest traditional authority in the city.
