Born on March 21, 1992, in Tomball, Texas, to Nigerian immigrant parents. She grew up in a close-knit household alongside her three sisters, including her older sister Nneka Ogwumike, who is also a professional basketball player.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
She attended Cy-Fair High School in Cypress, Texas, where she was a standout basketball player and a McDonald’s All-American. After high school, she earned a scholarship to Stanford University, where she studied International Relations and was mentored by former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice.
CAREER
Chiney was selected #1 overall in the 2014 WNBA Draft by the Connecticut Sun, becoming the second African woman to achieve that feat (after her sister Nneka). She made an immediate impact, averaging 15.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in her rookie season, and won the WNBA Rookie of the Year award.
