Educational Background
Ahmed began his secondary education at Government College, Funtua in Katsina State (1973–1978). He continued at Kwara Polytechnic for basic studies between 1978 and 1980. He later attended the University of Ilorin where he earned a degree in Chemistry in 1986 and went on to complete an MBA in 1992.
Career
Abdulfatah Ahmed started his professional journey as a lecturer in Organic Chemistry at the Federal College of Arts and Science, Sokoto, and later became the Acting Head of Department (1986–1990). Afterward, he moved into banking first with District Savings and Loans, then Guaranty Trust Bank, and later Societe Generale Bank, where he rose to become a Senior Manager in Consumer Banking and later worked with the Public Sector Group in Nigeria’s North West.
His political career took off in 2003 when he was appointed Commissioner for Finance under Governor Bukola Saraki’s administration in Kwara. He later served as the Commissioner for Planning and Economic Development and held various roles like Chairman of the State Economic Team and Budget Committee. In 2011, he contested for governor under the PDP and won.
As governor, Ahmed launched several programs aimed at improving lives in Kwara State. His “Shared Prosperity” agenda focused on jobs, roads, schools, and healthcare. One of his notable projects was KWABES, a program that helped young graduates gain job experience. He also started IF-K, a fund used to finance big infrastructure projects.
Under his leadership, over 400 school blocks were built or renovated. He also introduced free tuition and notebooks at the senior secondary level. He approved a 30% cut in tuition for students of Kwara State University and began construction of a new engineering complex worth N800 million. His government also introduced welfare programs for widows, the elderly, and orphans.

Controversies
Despite his achievements, Ahmed has faced serious corruption allegations. In December 2020, he was arrested by the EFCC over claims that he was part of a ₦2 billion financial fraud. In May 2021, he was detained again over another case involving ₦9 billion said to have gone missing during his time as Finance Commissioner and Governor.
In 2025, the EFCC charged him and his former Finance Commissioner, Ademola Banu, over the alleged diversion of ₦5.78 billion. A major part of this case involved UBEC funds that were reportedly used to pay workers’ salaries instead of improving school infrastructure. However, witnesses testified that the money was approved officially and no direct payments went to Ahmed or Banu personally.
