Educational Background

Kate had a very mobile childhood because her father was a teacher who got transferred often. This meant she attended several primary schools including St. Mary’s Primary School, Neni; Girls Practising School, Adazi Nnukwu; and Community Primary School, Adazi Ani.
She began her secondary school education at Ojiakor Memorial Secondary School, Adazi Ani and later completed it at Maria Regina Comprehensive Secondary School, Nnewi in 1980.
Afterwards, she attended the College of Education, Nsugbe (now Nwafor Orizu College of Education), where she got her NCE in 1983. She later earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education/English in 1987 and a Master’s degree in Mass Communication in 1998, both from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. She went on to complete a PhD in Gender, Media and Cultural Studies at the University of Gloucestershire in the United Kingdom in 2005.
Career

Kate started her career as an auxiliary teacher at Metuh Secondary School, Onitsha, before moving on to full-time teaching. She taught at Queen of the Rosary College, Onitsha, and then at Girls’ Secondary School, Awka-Etiti, where she rose to become a Vice Principal.
In 1998, she transitioned into the university system and joined Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) as a lecturer. She later became the Head of the Department of Mass Communication from 2006 to 2012 and also served as the Director of UNIZIK 94.1FM, the university’s community radio station.
In 2014, she was appointed Commissioner for Education in Anambra State and later served specifically as Commissioner for Basic Education until March 2022. During her time in office, schools under her supervision achieved several national and international awards.
In 2023, she was appointed Acting Vice Chancellor of COOU and was later confirmed as the substantive Vice Chancellor in 2024 after a successful tenure in acting capacity.
