Waddle began his professional career at Newcastle United before moving to Tottenham Hotspur, where he became a fan favourite. In 1989, he joined Olympique de Marseille for £4.5 million, making him the third most expensive player in the world at the time. Returning to England, he starred for Sheffield Wednesday, winning the FWA Footballer of the Year award in 1993.
