Educational Background

Sachs grew up in Oak Park, a suburb of Detroit, in a Jewish family. He finished from Oak Park High School and went on to Harvard University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in 1976, graduating summa cum laude. He later completed both his M.A. and Ph.D. in economics at Harvard. While still a graduate student, he was invited to join the Harvard Society of Fellows, a prestigious honor. His doctoral advisor was economist Martin Feldstein.
Career

Sachs began his academic career at Harvard University, where he also taught for several years. Later, he moved to Columbia University, where he has become one of the leading voices in global development. From 2001 to 2018, he served as a special adviser to the United Nations Secretary-General, first under Kofi Annan and later under Ban Ki-moon.
He played a major role in shaping the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and later the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which focus on ending poverty, promoting health, and protecting the environment. Sachs also co-founded the Millennium Promise Alliance, a nonprofit working to reduce extreme poverty, and helped launch the Millennium Villages Project.
Beyond development work, Sachs has written several books on economics and policy and serves as president of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network. In addition, he is a commissioner for the Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development, which works to expand global internet access.
Controversies

Sachs’ career has not been without criticism. His economic advice to some developing countries in the 1980s and 1990s, especially in Latin America and Eastern Europe, was controversial, with critics arguing that some of the policies worsened economic difficulties.
In recent years, his outspoken views on the COVID-19 pandemic, including suggestions about its possible origins, have drawn attention. He has also been criticized for his comments on the Russia–Ukraine war. Sachs claimed that NATO’s actions played a key role in provoking the conflict, and he said that French President Emmanuel Macron privately agreed with this view. These statements sparked debate and backlash in Western political circles.
