NIKOLAOS MICHALOLIAKOS BIOGRAPHY

Nikolaos “Nikos” Michaloliakos was born on 11 December 1957 in Athens, Greece. He grew up during a politically turbulent period in the country, which deeply shaped his nationalist and far-right ideology from an early age. At the age of 16, he joined the nationalist 4th of August Party, founded by Konstantinos Plevris, and later became involved with EOKA-B’s Athens branch, a nationalist paramilitary group originally active in Cyprus.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

Michaloliakos studied mathematics at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens.
CAREER

Michaloliakos began his political journey in far-right nationalist movements in the 1970s, often resulting in arrests for political violence and illegal possession of weapons and explosives. In the early 1980s, he established the Golden Dawn organization, which officially became a political party in 1993 with Michaloliakos as its General Secretary.
Initially a fringe movement, Golden Dawn gained traction during Greece’s financial crisis in the 2010s, capitalizing on public discontent with austerity, corruption, and immigration. In the 2012 elections, Golden Dawn entered the Hellenic Parliament for the first time, securing seats and establishing itself as one of Europe’s most notorious far-right parties. Michaloliakos himself served as a member of the Athens city council between 2010 and 2012 before moving fully into parliamentary politics
CONTROVERSIES

Michaloliakos has been one of the most controversial figures in modern Greek politics. He has been accused of:
- Extremism & Hate Speech: He made statements denying the Holocaust gas chambers and was linked to promoting violent nationalist ideology.
- Violence & Criminal Organization: Golden Dawn members were widely accused of carrying out violent attacks against immigrants, political opponents, and activists.
- Murder of Pavlos Fyssas: The 2013 killing of anti-fascist rapper Pavlos Fyssas by a Golden Dawn supporter triggered a major crackdown on the party.
In October 2020, a Greek court convicted Michaloliakos of leading a criminal organization and sentenced him to 13½ years in prison. He was briefly released on conditional parole in 2024, but the decision was revoked due to his lack of remorse. By 2025, due to ill health, he was permitted to serve part of his sentence under house arrest.
