Edward David Onoja was born on 9 August 1974 in Odidoko-Emonyoku, Ogugu District, Olamaboro Local Government Area of Kogi State, Nigeria. He was raised by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Amodu Onoja, in a modest background that emphasized discipline, education, and leadership.
EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND
His early years were spent in Lagos State, where he attended primary school before moving on to Federal Government College, Kwali, Abuja, for his secondary education. Onoja proceeded to the University of Jos, Plateau State, where he studied Geology and Mining. He graduated in 1999 with a Second Class Upper Division, ranking among the top students in his department.
CAREER
After completing his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Edward Onoja began his professional career at Total Fina-ELF Petroleum Nigeria Limited as a Trainee Geologist in the Exploration Department. He later transitioned into banking, joining Guaranty Trust Bank (GTBank) in 2001, where he worked in various roles including Customer Service, Operations Management, and branch development. He played a key role in establishing GTBank branches in Lokoja, Obajana, Okene, and Lafia.
Subsequently, he moved to Access Bank Plc, serving as Branch and Relationship Manager of the Lokoja Branch, handling both commercial and corporate banking portfolios, before being transferred to the Asokoro branch in Abuja.
Onoja ventured into politics in 2011, contesting for the Olamaboro State Constituency seat under the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). Though unsuccessful, he became more politically active, and by 2015, he was the Director-General of the Kogi Youth Arise Group, which mobilized youth support for Yahaya Bello. After Bello became Governor of Kogi State in January 2016, Onoja was appointed Chief of Staff.
In October 2019, he was sworn in as Deputy Governor of Kogi State, following the removal of his predecessor, Simon Achuba. He served in this capacity until 27 January 2024. In 2025, he was appointed as a Board Member of the South East Development Commission (SEDC), representing the North Central region.
CONTROVERSIES
Edward Onoja’s political career has not been without controversies. His close alliance with Yahaya Bello attracted both praise and criticism, as many saw him as one of Bello’s most trusted allies and enforcers.
